Paper products, oddly, were one of the last green products I switched to (odd because recycled paper products have been around now for quite some time). The price difference between recycled and regular paper products was for awhile enormous, and we were trying to stay within a tight budget. Fortunately, that price gap has been narrowing.
Many people ask about recycled paper, wondering if the quality is equivalent to non-recycled products. Yes, it is! Seventh Generation's bath tissue is similar to Scott's, which we used to use because we have a septic tank. It is not perfumed or quilted, which helps it to dissolve and degrade readily, and prevents waste from accumulating in sewer and septic systems.
Although recycled paper products still tend to be a little more expensive than non-recycled, think about the "other" costs associated with continuing to use non-recycled papers whitened with chlorine bleach: the trees cut down, the water wasted, the energy wasted, the CO2 produced, the toxins that leach into our water systems, and more.
The more consumers demand recycled paper products, the cheaper they will become. If menufacturers realize that there is a growing (and profitable) market for recycled products, then we may find ourselves living in a world in which all paper products are manufactured from recycled papers. Wouldn't that be great?!
