The Green Screen Rating

This score is a ranking based on how natural, eco-friendly, and non-toxic a product is, and is rated out of a possible total 5 stars.

STARS: 4 1/2 stars out of 5 for naturalness
COMMENTS: This product is setting an example in the plastics industry by using 55% recycled content, and hopefully that percentage will one day be able to climb even higher while maintaining affordability. In the meantime, Seventh Generation is one of only a few companies that manufacture bags made of recycled plastic.

Seventh Generation has established itself as a leader in the development of biodegradable, non-toxic, natural, and recycled alternatives to typical household products. You can more about their commitment to the environment by checking out their website:

Personal Recommendation

I finally found a trash bag that was made (at least partially) of recycled plastic. Think for a moment about all those garbage bags you throw out, day after day, and how much petroleum, water, and other resources were used to create them, and how much pollution was created in the process... all in the name of garbage disposal. Now think about how much plastic we can rescue from an eternity of just sitting in a landfill, by recycling it and turning it into trash bags. We can lessen the enormous burden on the planet our garbage is creating simply by recycling plastic resources.

The following information was taken from the Seventh Generation website:

Features and Benefits of Recycled Plastic Trash Bags
55% minimum recycled content (16% post-consumer)
Saves natural resources
Reduces pollution

If every household in the U.S. replaced just one package of 20-count drawstring tall kitchen bags made from virgin plastic with 65% recycled ones, we could save:

  • 39,00 barrels of oil, enough to heat and cool 2,200 U.S. homes for a year,
  • 720,000 cubic feet of landfill space, equal to 1,100 full garbage trucks,
  • and avoid 15,000 tons of pollution!
