The Greater Green Screen Rating

This score is a ranking based on how natural,
eco-friendly, and non-toxic a product is, and is rated out of a possible total 5 stars.

STARS: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars for naturalness
COMMENTS: This product is an extremely effective cleaner based on plant-derived surfactants, and contains no phosphates, no ammonia, and no bleach. According to Mrs. Meyer's, there are very few non-natural ingredients in this product, including the fragrance (which is primarily plant-derived, but does contain a synthetic element) and a synthetic preservative (Mrs. Meyers justifies this by the need to inhibit microbial growth).

It is important to note that the plant-derived surfactants most likely inlcude sodium laureth sulfate, which is created by reacting coconut oil with a petrochemical. Technically, I would not consider this a "natural" compound, but since it originally comes from coconut oil, many companies, including Seventh Generation, Tom's of Maine, and Ecover, call it just that.

However, since this cleaner does not contain any of the harsh chemicals that many traditional cleaners use, it still receives a decent Green Screen rating and is a MAJOR improvement over cleaners like Formula 409 or Fantastic. If you are looking for a 100% natural cleaner, then check out Aubrey Organics Earth Aware or Dr. Bronner's Organic Magic Soap.

Personal Recommendation

This spray cleaner is great for quick and easy clean-up of cabinets, tables, spills, and other odds and ends. It works well on almost any non-porous surface.

This spray is basically a diluted version of the all-purpose cleaner (which is highly concentrated), plus an odor-removing vegetable protein extract to make it even more versatile.

This spray bottle is great for refilling with Mrs. Meyer's All Purpose Cleaner. Simply dilute the All Purpose Cleaner at the ratio of 1/4 cup cleaner to 1 gallon warm water and fill the spray bottle. It's much cheaper than buying another spray bottle!

Something Else...

More about this product from Mrs. Meyer's website:

"Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Basil Countertop Spray takes the basic formula of our All Purpose Cleaner and adds a special Vegetable Protein Extract, a naturally fresh way to remove odors. Great on all non-porous surfaces such as finished wood and tile floors, counter-tops, walls, porcelain, bathroom fixtures, sealed natural and synthetic stone, and more.

Can you use Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Basil Countertop Spray on wood floors?

Yes, you can use the Countertop Spray on wood floors – as long as they are sealed with varnish, shellac or polyurethane. We do not recommend using our product on wood floors that are polished or buffed with a paste wax.

Can I use the Countertop Spray to clean Marble and Granite?

Make sure your granite and marble are sealed before you clean these surfaces. To find out, put a drop of water on the surface. If it beads up, it is sealed, and you can proceed as directed. If you do encounter a stain in Marble, call our office, as we do have a poultice recipe to help you remove the stain.

What is the difference between the Countertop Spray and the All Purpose Cleaner?

The Countertop Spray is ready to use in a convenient bottle with trigger-spray pump. It also contains a natural vegetable protein extract that is great for masking odors in the kitchen and bath. The All Purpose Cleaner is a highly concentrated cleaner that needs to be diluted before using 1/4 cup All Purpose to 1 gallon of warm water. The All Purpose Cleaner does not contain the Vegetable Protein Extract. Many of our customers use the All Purpose Cleaner (diluted) in the Countertop Spray bottle once it’s empty because of the handy trigger sprayer.

Can I use Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Basil Countertop Spray on glass and windows?

You may experience streaking when using this product on glass and windows. We recommend our Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Window Spray or Window Wipes for these surfaces.

What does the vegetable protein extract do and what vegetables is it made from?

The vegetable protein extract naturally neutralizes odors. It is made via an enyzematic fermentation process with non-wheat ingredients."
