The Greater Green Screen Rating

This score is a ranking based on how natural,
eco-friendly, and non-toxic a product is, and is rated out of a possible total 5 stars.

STARS: 5 out of 5 stars for naturalness
COMMENTS: There have been many studies and implications suggesting that the aluminum salts found in anti-perspirants may be toxic to your health. We know that aluminum itself is toxic, in high enough doses, and there have been numerous studies suggesting a link between build-up of aluminum in the body and Alzheimer's Disease. Other questions remain: Is it bad for developing children? Is there a link bbetween breast cancer and aluminum? Why do warning labels on anti-perspirants warn people whose kidneys aren't functioning properly to consult a doctor before using?

The truth is we have no definitive answers, though the research has convinced me that it is better to err on the side of safety, minimizing my exposure to the potentially harmful effects of aluminum and opting for all-natural herbs instead. This product represents a smart Green Screen choice.

Personal Recommendation

I'm going to be brutally honest here: there is no natural alternative that stops sweat the way that anti-perspirants do. That is because anti-perspirants use chemicals to block up the pores in the armpits, preventing the natural cooling mechanism that nature has given us. It takes aluminum salts to do this, and there is a lot of doubt as to the safety of aluminum when it enters the body. Read the Green Screen comments to the right for more about the potentially toxic effects of anti-perspirants.

So for me, anti-perspirants are out of the question, except on really important, rare, and stressful days (interviews, speeches, my wedding) when I just know that I am going to perspire profusely and it would be mortifying to find myself in a cloud of body odor. For all the other, fairly routine days, herbal deodorants have worked marvelously for me. I love Burt's Bees, and also Tom's of Maine, which smell herbally fresh and do a great job of controlling the growth of bacteria (which is the cause of body odor, not the sweat itself).

Something Else...

You may find that after using an herbal deodorant for awhile, the sticky, blocked-up feeling that anti-perspirants can leave on your armpits for days, even after showering, is extremely annoying (and worrisome). When I have to use anti-perspirant on those rare, stressful occasions, I use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to remove anti-perspirant residue before I go to bed.
